Recap: FIU vs. Pittsburgh

Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - James Conner rushed for 177 yards and three touchdowns, as the Pittsburgh Panthers erased an early double-digit deficit to down the FIU Panthers, 42-25, in a non-conference clash at FIU Stadium.

Conner did his damage on 31 carries for Pitt (3-0) and now has 544 rushing yards on the season, a school record for the first three games of a season. Chad Voytik completed 9-of-17 passes for 89 yards with a touchdown and an interception in addition to rushing for 114 yards and a score.

For FIU (1-2), Alex McGough completed just half his pass attempts (15-of-30) for 224 yards and three touchdowns (one rushing). Jonnu Smith recorded a game- high seven catches for 62 yards and a touchdown.

The first quarter was all FIU. First it tackled Voytik in the end zone for a safety at the 3:58 mark of the period, then less than a minute later McGough rushed in a three-yard touchdown.

After forcing a Pitt three-and-out, FIU struck again when McGough connected on a 57-yard touchdown pass to Glenn Coleman to put the home team up 16-0 after one frame.

Pitt settled down in the second quarter and climbed back in the game. Voytik ripped off a 32-yard touchdown run with 6:54 left in the half. The signal caller struck through the air four minutes later, hooking up with Tyler Boyd for an 18-yard score to make it 16-14.

Pitt was driving into FIU territory late in the half but Voytik was picked off by Wilkenson Myrtil to end the threat, one of three first-half takeaways by FIU.

Pitt tied the game with a safety early in the third quarter, then went up 22-16 following a Conner three-yard touchdown run just prior to a weather delay that stopped play for about an hour. The extra point was kicked after the delay to make it 23-16.

The delay did not stop Pitt's momentum, as it extended its lead with a 34-yard field goal by Chris Blewitt with 3:51 to play in the third.

FIU ended the Pitt run at 26 unanswered points with 12:46 left in the game following a 42-yard field goal by Austin Taylor.

After Pitt recorded yet another safety with 7:55 to play, it pulled away less than two minutes later when Connor rushed in 41-yard touchdown.

FIU would score another touchdown, a 12-yard pass from McGough to Smith, but Conner added another touchdown (11 yards) on Pitt's ensuing drive.

Pitt held FIU to just 293 yards and held nearly 36 minutes of possession time.
