Recap: Ohio State vs. Virginia Tech

Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Brewer threw a pair of touchdown passes and the Virginia Tech defense came up huge in the fourth quarter as the visiting Hokies stunned No. 8 Ohio State, 35-21, on Saturday.

Ohio State (1-1) trailed 21-7 at halftime but scored 14 unanswered points to tie the game early in the fourth quarter. Brewer came back and found Bucky Hodges for a 10-yard score at the 8:44 mark of the fourth, and the defense made the lead hold up.

The Hokies sacked OSU quarterback J.T. Barrett six times in the fourth period and intercepted him twice to secure the win. Donovan Riley picked off a poor throw with less than a minute remaining while the Buckeyes were driving and took it 63 yards to the end zone to put the game away.

Barrett, making his second collegiate start, completed just 9-of-29 for 219 yards and a touchdown and was picked off three times. He also ran for 70 yards and a score.

The loss marked OSU's first setback at home against an unranked, non- conference foe in 65 games.

The Buckeyes had also won 25 straight regular season games.

Brewer went 23-for-36 for Virginia Tech (2-0), racking up 199 yards and two touchdowns. Marshawn Williams and Shai McKenzie each had a touchdown run.

"We have to build on this win and go back and learn from it," said Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer.

The difference in this one was third down efficiency. The Hokies converted 9- of-17 attempts, while Barrett and OSU only picked up a first down four times in 16 tries.

"We have to get off the field," said OSU defensive back Von Bell. "That's the money down right there. We have to make plays and execute."

McKenzie ran it in from two yards out, capping a 10-play series and giving Virginia Tech an early 7-0 lead. Barrett led OSU down the field on its ensuing touch and tied the game with his 2-yard touchdown, but Williams' 14-yard TD run near the end of the period made it 14-7.

Brewer led a two-minute drill at the end of the first half, completing 5-of-7 passes and finding Sam Rogers for a 10-yard touchdown 52 seconds before halftime.

The hosts regrouped in the locker room and controlled the third quarter, pulling within a touchdown when Barrett connected with Michael Thomas on a post for a 53-yard score.

Brewer was sacked on Virginia Tech's first possession of the fourth and fumbled. Rashad Frazier recovered at the Hokies 15 and two plays later, Barrett handed to Ezekiel Elliott for a 15-yard touchdown run.

A Deon Newsome 24-yard run on the next series set up Brewer's eventual game- winning touchdown pass to Hodges.
