Recap: Virginia Tech vs. Western Mich

Blacksburg, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Michal Brewer threw for 178 yards and two touchdowns, as the Virginia Tech Hokies celebrated Homecoming weekend with a 35-17 non-conference win over the Broncos of Western Michigan at Lane Stadium.

Brewer was also intercepted twice, but Marshawn Williams carried 14 times for a game-high 119 yards, and Shai McKenzie added 87 yards and a TD on the ground to help the Hokies (3-2) end a two-game slide.

Jarvion Franklin had 76 yards and a pair of TDs on 15 carries for the Broncos (2-2), while Daniel Braverman finished with an even 100 yards on eight catches in the loss. Zach Terrell was sacked five times and completed 18-of-32 passes for 212 yards and an interception.

Virginia Tech scored on the game's first play from scrimmage on an 11-yard fumble return by Andrew Motuapuaka, although the PAT failed.

The Hokies came up with a safety just over a minute later, then pushed their lead to 11-0 on a 37-yard field goal by Joey Slye a little more than three minutes into the contest.

WMU got on the board at the 4:15 mark of the opening frame on a one-yard touchdown plunge by Franklin. Broncos cornerback Ronald Zamort set up the score with a 39-yard interception return down to the Hokies 3.

But Virginia Tech answered right back on the ensuing possession as Brewer found Bucky Hodges for a 29-yard scoring strike to make it an 18-7 game.

Broncos kicker Andrew Haldeman accounted for the only points of the second quarter with a 36-yard field goal just before the half to send WMU into the locker room trailing, 18-10.

However, the Hokies stretched their lead with two unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter; a seven-yard pass from Brewer to Isaiah Ford, and a four-yard run by McKenzie.

Franklin scored on another one-yard run at the 9:06 mark of the fourth quarter to make it a 32-17 game, but the Hokies defense held strong the rest of the way and Slye tacked on a late 27-yard field goal for the final margin.

WMU was held to only 10 first downs and 231 total yards for the game.
