Recap: Iowa State vs. Texas Tech

Ames, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - Patrick Mahomes threw for 328 yards and four touchdowns as the Texas Tech Red Raiders squeezed by Iowa State, 34-31, in Big 12 Conference action at Jack Trice Stadium.

Mahomes converted 23-of-35 passes, was intercepted once and sacked two times as the Red Raiders (4-7, 2-6 Big 12) snapped a three-game slide leading up to their season finale against Baylor next week. Devin Lauderdale caught only two passes but he stretched them for 95 yards and a pair of scores for the visitors.

On the ground, Tech was led by DeAndre Washington who ran for a game-high 186 yards and a score in the triumph.

The Cyclones (2-8, 0-7), losers of four in a row and all alone in last place in the conference standings, were led by Sam Richardson who converted 24-of-38 passes for 304 yards and two TDs, but was sacked three times. Running back Aaron Wimberly accounted for 102 yards and two scores on the ground.

The Red Raiders ran out to a 14-0 lead as Washington caught a 26-yard TD from Mahomes just over four minutes into the first quarter. Washington then burst 72 yards on the ground to the end zone about five minutes later.

However, not only did ISU put an end to the scoring by the Red Raiders, the Cyclones scored 24 straight between the first and third quarters, beginning with a 13-yard TD pass from Richardson to E.J. Bibbs in the final minute of the opening stanza.

In the second quarter, Richardson hooked up with Tyler Brown for an 11-yard TD pass play and kicker Cole Netten delivered a 22-yard field goal to finish off a 16-play, 91-yard drive in the final minutes of the first half.

The lead for Iowa State reached double figures at the 10:57 mark of the third when Wimberly slipped over the goal line from two yards out.

Then it was Tech's turn to go on the attack as Mahomes and Lauderdale combined on touchdown passes of 13 and 82 yards in a span of just over four minutes in the third to make the score 27-24 after a failed PAT on the first TD.

Needing just two plays to cover 52 yards, the Cyclones reclaimed the lead moments into the fourth when Wimberly celebrated a three-yard TD run.

Trailing 31-27, Texas Tech mounted a seven-play, 75-yard drive, consuming just 1:33 on the clock and finishing with a 44-yard TD pass from Mahomes to Kenny Williams for the game-winning score.

The teams combined for 1,169 yards of total offense on the day.
