Recap: Illinois vs. Western Ky

Champaign, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Illinois quarterback Wes Lunt threw a career-high 456-yards and three touchdowns as the Fighting Illini defeated the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, 42-34, in non-conference action at Memorial Stadium.

Lunt converted on 35-of-50 pass attempts but was also intercepted once Taylor for the Fighting Illini (2-0). Justin Hardee pitched in with six catches for 118-yards and a touchdown and Geronimo Allison contributed 97 yards on eight grabs.

As for the Hilltoppers (1-1), Brandon Doughty threw for 297 yards and two touchdowns while Leon Allen recorded 118 yards on the ground.

Josh Ferguson capped off a four-play, 32-yard drive when he ran in from the one-yard line to give Illinois an early 7-0 lead.

Garrett Schwettman nailed a 41-yd field goal to cut the lead to 7-3 with 5:35 left to play in the first quarter.

The Hilltoppers struck again in the second quarter when Allen ran in from one- yard out to give WKU a 10-7 lead.

Later in the second quarter Doughty connected with Tyler Higbee for a 16-yard touchdown pass, extending the Hilltoppers' lead to 17-7.

The Fighting Illini cut into the deficit near the end of the first half when Lunt completed a pass to Allison, who took the ball to the one-yard line where he fumbled the ball, only to have it recovered in the end zone by teammate Mike Dudek.

Illinois finished the opening drive of the second half drive 6with an eight- yard touchdown connection from Lunt to Martize Barr.

Later in the quarter, Malik Turner fumbled and Wonderful Terry scooped up the ball and returned it 95 yards for a touchdown, giving Western Kentucky a 24-21 lead.

A 19-yard field goal from Schwettman late in the quarter pushed the Hilltoppers to a 27-21 advantage.

Illinois regained the lead in the fourth quarter when Lunt connected with Hardee on a 62-yard touchdown pass.

Illinois extended its lead when Taylor Barton picked off a Doughty pass and returned it 77 yards for a touchdown.

With under two minutes to play Donovonn Young scored on a one-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 42-27.

Antwane Grant collected a 14-yard touchdown pass from Doughty with 26 seconds remaining, but it was not enough.

In Lunt's first two games of 2014 he has accumulated 741 yards passing and seven touchdowns.
