Recap: New Mexico vs. Arizona State

Albuquerque, NM ( - Taylor Kelly threw two touchdown passes and ran another one in as No. 17 Arizona State rolled to a 58-23 win over New Mexico.

Kelly went 11-for-20 for 192 yards while adding 84 yards on 10 carries for the Sun Devils (2-0), who had opened the season with a win over Weber State. D.J. Foster totaled 216 yards and a score on 19 carries.

Lamar Jordan went 7-for-11 for 130 yards and a touchdown for the Lobos (0-2), who lost three fumbles in the game. Teryion Gipson caught a touchdown pass, while Jhurell Pressley and Crusoe Gongbay each ran one in.

"I will tell you what I told the team and I mean it sincerely," said New Mexico head coach Bob Davie. "It's not about talent. We have some talent on this football team. We're just not capable right now of executing at a high enough level for a consistent amount of time and it's our job as coaches to get them to execute better."

Arizona State scored on its first touch of the game as a 5-play, 66-yard drive was capped on a Deantre Lewis 1-yard run and the team converted a 2-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

A fumble recovery led to the Sun Devils' next score as the team recovered a loose ball at the New Mexico 30 and Kelly ran it in from 12 yards out for a 15-0 lead.

The Lobos fumbled on their next possession and Kalen Ballage ran the ball in on a 1-yard score and a 22-0 lead with just over four minutes to play in the first.

New Mexico finally got it together on its next touch as an 8-play, 75-yard drive found paydirt when Pressley scored from eight yards out to make it a 22-7 game.

A 3-yard TD run from Ballage with 9 1/2 to play in the second quarter gave Arizona State a 29-7 lead, but New Mexico needed just four plays to answer when Jordan and Gipson got together on a 32-yard score.

This time it was an Arizona State fumble that was recovered by New Mexico, and Gongbay took the ball into the end zone from five yards out for a 29-21 game with just under five minutes to play in the first half.

Zane Gonzalez's 29-yard field goal in the final second of the first half sent Arizona State into the break with a 32-21 lead.

Foster ripped off a 49-yard run on the first play of the third quarter, setting up a 24-yard touchdown pass from Kelly to Jaelen Strong. The extra point was blocked and it was a 38-21 game.

A fumble recovered by Arizona State, its third of the game, gave the team the ball back at the New Mexico 41 and the next snap saw Kelly and Cameron Smith connect for a score and a 45-21 lead.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, New Mexico faced a 4th-and-2 at the Arizona State 16 and opted to go for it, but failed to convert as Gongbay was stuffed for just one yard.

Foster ran in a score from a yard out with just over seven minutes to play. Gonzalez had another extra point blocked, and this one was returned for a defensive two-point conversion to make it a 51-23 game.

Demario Richard ran in a score from 46 yards out with four minutes to play to cap the scoring in the game.

Johnson headlines FCS players of the week

In 2013, the Montana State Bobcats made a bit of an offensive switch, going from a pass-heavy system to a more run- integrated style of play. The reason wasn't because the team was unstable at quarterback, but rather due to the fact the Bobcats were loaded at the running back position.
