Recap: Washington St vs. California

Pullman, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jared Goff threw for 527 yards and five touchdowns as the California Golden Bears outlasted the Washington State Cougars, 60-59, in a Pac-12 shootout at Martin Stadium.

Goff completed 37-of-53 pass attempts for California (4-1, 2-1 Pac-12), which finished with 589 total yards. Bryce Treggs tallied 120 yards and two scores on 10 receptions, Stephen Anderson had 95 yards on five grabs and Trevor Davis scored four total touchdowns.

The loss ruined a record-setting night for Washington State (2-4, 1-2) quarterback Connor Halliday, who set a new NCAA record with 734 passing yards. He completed 49-of-70 pass attempts and also had six touchdown passes. Vince Mayle and River Cracraft each had 11 receptions, with Mayle recording 263 yards and a touchdown and Cracraft picking up 172 yards and three scores. Dom Williams had 107 yards on five grabs and Isiah Myers finished with 96 yards and two touchdowns on nine receptions.

After a false start penalty pushed them back five yards on their second drive the Cougars got a 90-yard touchdown pass from Halliday to Mayle.

The Cougars also got a 42-yard field goal from Quentin Breshears in the opening quarter.

Goff threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Davis to put California on the board early in the second frame.

Halliday responded with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Isiah Myers, capping off an 85-yard drive.

The Golden Bears were unable to score a touchdown in response, settling for a 31-yard field goal from James Langford on their next drive.

Halliday threw his third touchdown pass of the game soon after, hooking up with Cracraft for a 17-yard strike.

California managed to get a 26-yard field goal from Langford as time expired in the first half.

The Golden Bears struck quickly in the third quarter, with Daniel Lasco scoring on a 27-yard touchdown reception from Goff less than a minute after the second half began.

Lasco struck again soon after, tallying a 15-yard touchdown run with 11:31 to play in the third period.

Halliday threw an 86-yard touchdown pass to Cracraft on the next drive and then Gerard Wicks scored on a one-yard touchdown run just under three minutes later.

Davis returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to make sure the Cougars didn't get too far ahead.

That didn't stop Halliday from continuing to rack up the touchdowns as he threw a nine-yard score to Myers on the next drive.

Special teams play continued to keep the Golden Bears hanging around as Davis ran the next kickoff back 98 yards for a touchdown.

Cracraft brought in another touchdown pass, this time from nine yards out, with just over two minutes to go in the third quarter.

California scored in the first minute of the final period on a five-yard touchdown pass from Goff to Treggs.

The Golden Bears then took the lead on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Goff to Treggs midway through the quarter.

The Cougars responded with a one-yard touchdown run from Wicks on their next drive, but Goff threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Davis just over a minute later, though the ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed.

Halliday then marched the Cougars 68 yards down the field in just over three minutes to set up a potential game-winning field goal, but Breshears missed wide right.

Halliday broke the FBS record of 716 passing yards set by Houston's David Klingler in 1990 as well as the overall NCAA record of 731, which was set by Zamir Amin of Division III Cal Lutheran in 2000.
