Recap: Nevada vs. Washington St

Reno, NV (SportsNetwork.com) - Cody Fajardo passed for 110 yards and rushed for another 100 to help lead his Nevada Wolf Pack to a 24-13 victory over the Washington State Cougars in a non-conference tilt Friday at Mackay Stadium.

Don Jackson carried the ball 22 times for 69 yards and two touchdowns for Nevada (2-0), which is coming off a season-opening win over Southern Utah. James Butler added another 55 yards on the ground with a rushing score of his own in the win.

Connor Halliday completed 38-of-57 pass attempts for 389 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for Washington State (0-2), which dropped its Week 1 matchup against Rutgers. Isiah Myers led the Cougars with nine receptions for 102 yards in the defeat.

Nevada was the first to score as Jackson took a handoff and plunged into the end zone from a yard out with 1:18 to play in the opening quarter. The Wolf Pack led 7-0 at the end of the period.

It was Butler who got the one-yard touchdown run for Nevada early in the second quarter, which capped a 10-play, 91-yard drive that gave the Wolf Pack the 14-0 advantage.

Halliday found Vince Mayle on a 13-yard hookup with 7:15 remaining in the half to get the Cougars on the board. The completion finished off a five-play, 80- yard drive. Washington State finished the half by tacking on a 25-yard Erik Powell field goal with 1:54 remaining. The Cougars trailed, 14-10, at the midway break.

After a scoreless third quarter, Jackson punched in his second touchdown of the night from two yards out to give the Wolf Pack a 21-10 advantage.

Quentin Breshears got a chance to boot a 38-yard field goal for the Cougars, who put their first points on the board since the second quarter, with 9:32 left to play. But Nevada's Brent Zuzo answered with a 40-yard field goal of his own with 4:25 remaining to make it 24-13 Nevada. The scoring stopped there.

Nevada was dominant in the ground game, utilizing a read-option offense that resulted in 214 rushing yards, while Washington State managed just 38 in the category. Halliday has passed for over 350 yards in each of his first two contests this season.
