Recap: Western Ky vs. Bowling Green

Bowling Green, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Powered by a school record 569 passing yards and six touchdowns from Brandon Doughty, the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers scorched the Bowling Green Falcons, 59-28, in the season opener at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.

Doughty completed 46-of-56 pass attempts for Western Kentucky (1-0). Taywan Taylor had 12 receptions for 185 yards and a touchdown, Jared Dangerfield added 92 yards and two scores on 10 catches and Willie McNeal finished with 70 yards and two touchdowns on five grabs. The win was the first for the Hilltoppers under new head coach Jeff Brohm.

Playing for a new coach of their own in Dino Babers, Bowling Green (0-1) finished with 465 total yards. Matt Johnson threw for 314 of those yards, as well as a touchdown, on 25-of-36 passing. Travis Green rushed for 91 yards and a score on 18 carries and Gehrig Dieter and Roger Lewis each had 78 receiving yards.

Leon Allen scored on his second carry of the game, taking the ball across the goal line from two yards out to give Western Kentucky a 7-0 lead.

The Hilltoppers increased their advantage later in the first quarter when Doughty threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Taylor.

Doughty threw his second touchdown pass when he hooked up with Antwane Grant for a 34-yard score midway through the second quarter.

Fred Coppet gave the Falcons their first points of the year when he ran the ball in for a one-yard touchdown.

McNeal collected a nine-yard touchdown pass from Doughty just over two minutes later.

On their next drive the Falcons could not respond with another touchdown, instead settling for a 52-yard field goal from Tyler Tate.

After Tate's field goal there was still enough time for the Hilltoppers to increase their lead, as Garrett Schwettman nailed a 29-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

Doughty added to his touchdown total with a five-yard scoring strike to Dangerfield early in the third quarter.

Bowling Green cut into its deficit with another rushing touchdown, this time on a three-yard run from Andre Givens.

The Falcons did not stop there. Less than two minutes later Johnson threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Ronnie Moore. cutting the Hilltoppers' advantage to 38-24.

In response, Doughty continued to dominate, throwing his fifth touchdown pass of the game on a 20-yard strike to McNeal.

Doughty connected with Dangerfield for yet another touchdown, this one from five-yards out, to extend the Hilltoppers to a 52-24 advantage.

Greene tacked on an eight-yard rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Western Kentucky put the finishing touches on its win with a one-yard touchdown run by Anthony Wales.

The Hilltoppers totaled 702 yards of total offense on 97 plays. They were also a perfect 7-of-7 on red zone chances.
