Recap: Western Ky vs. UAB

Bowling Green, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Jordan Howard ran for a career-high 183 yards and a pair of touchdowns, the second of those proving to be the game-winner, as the UAB Blazers slipped by the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, 42-39, in Conference USA play at Smith Stadium.

Howard carried the ball 34 times for a UAB (3-2, 1-1 CUSA) squad that produced 291 yards and three scores on 64 rushing attempts on the night. Cody Clements also scored on the ground for the visitors, but it was his pinpoint passing (22-of-25 for 300 yards and two touchdowns) that figured even more important for the Blazers as they won for the second time in three tries.

The Hilltoppers (2-3, 0-2) were led by Anthony Wales with his 138 yards and three TDs on 14 rushing attempts, while quarterback Brandon Doughty connected on 25-of-37 for 319 yards and two TDs in he setback.

UAB wasted no time in scoring the first points of the night as JJ Nelson returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a score.

On their first possession of the contest, the Hilltoppers turned to Doughty who directed an eight-play, 72-yard drive, capped by a 15-yard TD pass to Taywan Taylor to tie the score at 7-7. The hosts took the lead a little over four minutes later when Wales crossed the goal line on a two-yard effort.

The first 15 minutes was filled with big plays as Wales added a 75-yard TD at the 2:29 mark, but 11 seconds prior the Blazers registered their second score of the meeting on a 24-yard TD pass from Clements to Kennard Backman.

Wales posted his third touchdown of the night at the 6:30 mark of the second, a 21-yard effort, to give WKU a 27-14 advantage at the break.

The Blazers came storming back in the third quarter with three consecutive touchdowns, starting with a one-yard run by Howard, continuing with a five- yard run by Clements and finishing with a Josh McGee 75-yard TD grab in order for UAB to assume a 35-27 advantage.

Western Kentucky regained the lead later in the third thanks to back-to-back TDs furnished by Antwane Grant on a 24-yard pass from Doughty and an interception by Ricardo Singh returned 85 yards, providing the hosts with a 39-35 edge as the fourth quarter began.

Howard's 15-yard TD run at the 12:17 mark of the final frame gave the Blazers the lead once again, but also left plenty of time on the clock, but the Hilltoppers failed to capitalize.

Averaging close to eight yards per play, WKU produced 503 yards of total offense and remained competitive despite converting only 3-of-10 on third down.
