Recap: Middle Tennessee vs. Fla Atlantic

Murfreesboro, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Reggie Whatley rushed for 190 yards and scored three touchdowns on the ground as the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders came from behind to defeat the Florida Atlantic Owls, 35-34, in a Conference USA clash at Floyd Stadium.

Austin Grammer completed 20-of-27 pass attempts for 160 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for Middle Tennessee (6-5, 5-2 C-USA), which ended a two- game losing skid with the victory. Marcus Henry hauled in 92 receiving yards with the game-winning touchdown in the closing seconds.

Jaquez Johnson completed 21-of-33 passing for 304 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for FAU (3-8, 2-5), which has lost four games in a row. Johnson added a rushing touchdown and 53 yards on the ground in the loss.

Florida Atlantic went up 10-0 early against Middle Tennessee thanks to a Lucky Whitehead 80-yard touchdown run just 18 seconds into the contest, and then a Greg Joseph 25-yard field goal with 7:26 to play in the first period.

Grammer found Christian Collis on a four-yard touchdown pass with 4:38 to play in the first, cutting the FAU lead to 10-7.

Johnson responded with 56 seconds remaining in the first quarter when he kept the ball and scored from one yard out to give the Owls a 17-7 advantage.

With 2:31 to play in the second quarter, Whatley carried the ball 30 yards to the end zone for a Blue Raiders touchdown that cut the FAU lead to 17-14.

Kalib Woods hauled in a 23-yard pass from Johnson for the touchdown with 13 minutes remaining in the third quarter to give FAU the 24-14 edge, and then Joseph's 19-yard field goal with 8:01 to play boosted the Owls' lead to 27-14.

Whatley scored again, this time on a 75-yard run with 7:42 to play in the third to cut FAU's advantage to 27-21.

But Alex Deleon hauled in a five-yard touchdown pass from Johnson with 5:50 to play in the contest to increase FAU's lead once again, this time to 34-21.

Middle Tennessee didn't quit, and Whatley scored his third touchdown run of the night with 4:15 left to play. His nine-yard score cut the deficit to six points, and the Grammer hooked up with Henry on a 12-yard touchdown strike with 19 seconds to play to give Middle Tennessee the 35-34 lead and eventual win.

Middle Tennessee had a 310-230 advantage in terms of rushing yards, and converted 8-of-14 third-down tries to help the team along in the win.
