Recap: Southern Miss vs. Louisiana Tech

Hattiesburg, MS (SportsNetwork.com) - Cody Sokol threw for 423 yards and three touchdowns as the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs defeated the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, 31-20, in a Conference USA battle at M.M.Roberts Stadium.

Sokol connected on 27-of-46 passes for the Bulldogs (5-3, 4-0 C-USA), while Kenneth Dixon rushed for 41 yards and one touchdown and recorded 124 receiving yards with two touchdowns.

As for the Golden Eagles (3-5, 1-3), Cole Weeks threw for 338 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Michael Thomas contributed 104 receiving yards and one touchdown, while George Payne rushed for 15 yards and a touchdown.

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring when Payne ran for a 18-yard touchdown with nine minutes to play in the first quarter.

Kyle Fischer got the Bulldogs on the board early in the second quarter when he connected on a 24-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3. Then Sokol connected with Dixon on a 84-yard touchdown pass to give the Bulldogs a 10-7 lead with 14:14 left to play in the third quarter.

The Golden Eagles would tie the score with just over seven minutes left in the third quarter, when Corey Acosta kicked a 44-yard field goal.

Late in the third quarter, Sokol connected with Dixon again for a five-yard touchdown pass to give the Bulldogs a 17-10 lead.

Acosta connected on a 26-yard field goal for the Golden Eagles with 9:31 to play in the contest to cut the lead 17-13.

The Bulldogs would score two more times, first when Sokol threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Carlos Henderson with about seven minutes left in the game. Then roughly three minutes later, Dixon rushed for a one-yard touchdown to push the lead to 31-13.

With under three minutes to play, Weeks threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Thomas to cut the lead to 31-20, but this is the closest the Golden Eagles would get.

The Bulldogs defense held the opposition to minus-31 yards rushing in the win.
