Recap: North Texas vs. Southern Miss

Denton, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Mullens threw for 305 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, as the Southern Miss Golden Eagles defeated the North Texas Mean Green, 30-20, in a Conference USA battle at Apogee Stadium.

Mullens connected on 27-of-41 passes for the Golden Eagles (3-4, 1-2 C-USA), while Michael Thomas contributed 76 yards receiving and a touchdown. Casey Martin added 51 yards receiving and a score, and George Payne chipped in with 67 yards on the ground and a touchdown in the win.

As for the Mean Green (2-5, 0-3), Andrew McNulty completed 20-of-35 passes for 287 yards. Antoinne Jimmerson contributed 57 yards rushing and a touchdown.

The Golden Eagles scored first when Mullens connected with Thomas on a 40-yard touchdown pass with 11:43 to play in the first quarter. Then with 1:24 to play in the opening quarter, Corey Acosta pushed the lead to 10-0 with a 38-yard field goal.

The Mean Green would respond. First Jimmerson rushed for a 2-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. Then Trevor Moore kicked two field goals - one from 36 yards and the other a 24-yarder - to give North Texas a 13-10 lead with 1:37 to play in the half.

Acosta tied the score with a 27-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

With just over nine minutes left in the third quarter, Payne rushed for a 5- yard touchdown to give the Golden Eagles a 20-13 lead.

Three minutes later, Reggie Pegram ran for a 27-yard touchdown for North Texas to tie the score at 20-20.

Late in the third quarter, Mullens connected with Martin on a 19-yard touchdown pass as the Golden Eagles regained the lead.

With just over 12 minutes left in the game, Acosta kicked a 38-yard field goal to push the lead to 30-20 and close out the scoring.

The Golden Eagles won the total yardage battle, 506-395.
