Recap: Old Dominion vs. Eastern Mich

Norfolk, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Gerard Johnson tallied 85 yards on 19 carries to help the Old Dominion Monarchs defeat the Eastern Michigan Eagles, 17-3, in a non-conference matchup at Foreman Field.

Taylor Heinicke completed 17-of-30 passes for 187 yards with an interception while under center for ODU (2-1) as it rebounded from the 46-34 loss it suffered at NC State last week. Antonio Vaughan racked up a game-high 54 receiving yards and scored a special teams touchdown with a punt return, while Ray Lawry compiled 69 rushing yards on four carries, including a 55-yard touchdown rush. D.J. Simon anchored the Monarchs' defensive unit with 11 total stops.

Bronson Hill paced the EMU (1-2) attack with 78 rushing yards on 16 attempts. The Eagles struggled to get anything going through the air, as Brogan Roback finished 9-of-17 for 56 yards. EMU, which will travel to East Lansing to face Michigan State next week, has not registered a touchdown in nine consecutive quarters. Great Ibe tied for the game high with 11 total tackles, while Pat O'Connor made nine stops, including three tackles for loss and two sacks.

The only score of the opening half came when Lawry broke away for his fourth career touchdown run at the 7:23 mark of the first quarter. Ricky Seger's successful extra-point attempt gave the Monarchs a 7-0 lead, which they protected until the intermission.

ODU tallied 261 yards of total offense compared to only 150 by the Eagles in the first two quarters of play.

The Monarchs added to their lead in the closing seconds of the third frame, as Segers connected on a 26-yard field goal attempt.

Dylan Mulder helped EMU prevent a shutout with a successful 43-yard field goal attempt with just over nine minutes left in regulation. ODU quickly made it a two-possession game again as Antonio Vaughan returned a punt 46 yards for a touchdown less than two minutes later.

The Monarchs prevailed despite moving the chains on only two of their 15 third down plays. EMU tallied only 215 total yards on 72 offensive plays and lost two of its five fumbles.
