Recap: UAB vs. Troy

Birmingham, AL ( - Jordan Howard ran for 179 yards and two touchdowns as the UAB Blazers blasted the Troy Trojans, 48-10, in non- conference action at Legion Field.

Howard carried the ball 19 times for the Blazers (1-0) as they generated 339 yards and four scores on the ground. D.J. Vinson accounted for another 106 yards and a touchdown on 22 attempts, while quarterback Cody Clements hit on 12-of-18 passing for 150 yards and a pair of TDs, against one interception.

The Trojans (0-1) were led by quarterback Brandon Silvers who converted 16- of-23 for 153 yards, but was sacked four times. Jordan Chunn, who ran for 11 net yards on eight carries, scored the only touchdown of the day for the visitors.

The Trojans scored the first points of the contest when Chunn capped a five- play, 75-yard drive with a one-yard TD run, but from there the meeting belonged to the hosts as they rattled off 24 unanswered points.

The UAB scoring burst began with a two-yard TD run by Howard at the 8:51 mark of the first quarter, followed by a three-yard scoring pass from Clements to Kennard Backman.

In the final minute of the first frame, kicker Ty Long knocked through a 34- yard field goal and midway through the second quarter Backman reeled in an 18- yard TD pass from Clements.

At the end of the first half Troy kicker Ryan Kay came on to convert a 47-yard field goal, making the score 24-10 at the break.

In the third quarter the Blazers picked up where they left off as Howard and Clements registered rushing touchdowns of 55 and one yard, respectively. In the fourth frame Long hit a 49-yard field goal and Vinson finished off an eight-play, 42-yard drive with a three-yard TD run, allowing the Blazers to cruise to the comfortable victory.

UAB, which produced 489 yards of total offense, converted 10-of-13 on third down during the afternoon.

These teams opened the 2013 campaign against each other as well, with the Trojans slipping by in overtime, 34-31, at home.
