Recap: Kansas State vs. Stephen F Austin

Manhattan, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Jake Waters threw for two touchdowns and ran for two scores to lead the No. 20 Kansas State Wildcats to a 55-16 victory over the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks on Saturday.

Waters completed 19 of his 28 passes for 223 yards and an interception, while rushing for 55 yards on 17 carries. Charles Jones also totaled 55 yards on the ground with two touchdowns for the Wildcats (1-0), who improved to 21-2 in home openers under head coach Bill Snyder.

"I thought we played reasonably well offensively. We scored in our first four or five possessions," Snyder said.

Kody Cook, Steven West and Tyler Lockett each caught a touchdown pass in the rout.

Zach Conque went 17-of-30 for 118 yards, while Joe Minden threw 7-of-9 passes for 107 yards with a rushing touchdown for Stephen F. Austin (0-1).

"They are a great physical football team," Lumberjacks head coach Clint Conque said of K-State.

Gus Johnson led the Lumberjacks with 26 rushing yards on eight carries and a score, while Aaron Thomas had a game-high 85 receiving yards on six catches in the first ever meeting between the two schools.

Kansas State opened the scoring on its first drive. Waters' pass to DeMarcus Robinson set the Wildcats up at the Lumberjacks 28. Waters recovered his own fumble and made the most of it by gaining nine yards on the play. Three plays later, Waters' 9-yard strike to Lockett made it a 7-0 game.

After the Lumberjacks went three-and-out, Waters capped a 6:40 drive with a 5-yard scamper to start the second quarter.

The Wildcats didn't waste as much time on their next drive. Jones hauled in a 17-yard catch, placing Kansas State into its opponents territory. Consecutive rushes of 15 yards apiece by Waters and Jones gave the Wildcats a 21-0 lead after 2:24 of possession.

Stephen F. Austin got on the board on its next drive. Robert Sylvester made a 30-yard catch that was followed by Thomas' reception of 37 yards. Minden scored on an 18-yard dash with 6:57 remaining in the first half.

Waters ran in from a yard out to make it a 28-7 game before Lumberjacks kicker Jordan Wiggs split the uprights from 33 yards out for a 28-10 score heading into the half.

Kansas State scored twice early in the third. Waters connected with Cook on a 22-yard touchdown pass. After Will Davis recovered Johnson's fumble at the Lumberjacks' 21, Jones ran the ball in from four yards out after three straight runs to make it 42-10.

Johnson's 30-yard rushing touchdown capped a drive that was set up by Collin Garrett's interception of Waters. Wiggs missed the extra point.

Jack Cantele added a 43-yard field goal to start the fourth. Backup Joe Hubener took over at quarterback on the next drive and rushed six times for 33 yards before ending the attack with a 15-yard heave to West with less than nine minutes to play.

Wildcats kicker Matthew McCrane's 38-yarder with 2:34 left accounted for the final score.
