Recap: Arkansas State vs. South Alabama

Jonesboro, AR (SportsNetwork.com) - Fredi Knighten threw a pair of touchdowns and ran for another as he guided the Arkansas State Red Wolves to a convincing 45-10 victory over the South Alabama Jaguars in Sun Belt Conference play at Centennial Bank Stadium.

Knighten finished the day 17-of-32 through the air for 186 yards, adding another game-high 80 yards on 14 rushing attempts for the Red Wolves (6-3, 4-1 Sun Belt) as they won their second straight and the fifth in the last six outings.

The Jaguars (5-4, 4-3), losers of back-to-back affairs, generated a total of just 201 yards of offense, as quarterback Matt Floyd hit on only 8-of-20 for 86 yards, was intercepted twice and sacked three times. Hunter Vaughn missed on all but one of his five throws and had as many completions to ASU players as he did his own teammates.

It wasn't until there was less than three minutes remaining in the opening quarter that the first points of the game were recorded, as Knighten hooked up with Dijon Paschal on a 47-yard TD pass play to give the hosts a 7-0 advantage.

On the next possession by USA, the team moved the ball just 18 yards on six plays, but was still in position to give kicker Aleem Sunanon an opportunity at a field goal, as he made good on a 41-yard attempt.

The second quarter saw ASU rip off 17 unanswered points, beginning with a 17- yard run by Knighten, followed by a Luke Ferguson 46-yard field goal and finishing with a two-yard TD pass from Knighten to Warren Leapheart.

The scoring burst continued for the Red Wolves in the second half as Michael Gordon and Johnston White scored on touchdown runs of one and five yards, respectively, giving ASU a commanding 38-3 lead with 6:36 to play in the third quarter.

The defense got in on the act for the Red Wolves moments into the fourth quarter, as Artez Brown picked off a pass and returned it 58 yards to the end zone, making the score 45-3.

South Alabama finally made it into the end zone with just 1:22 left in the contest as Berron Tyson crossed the goal line from one yard out. Unfortunately for the Jaguars, it was clearly too little, too late as ASU ran out the clock.

The Jags were a dismal 1-of-12 on third down, compared to a USA squad that was 10-of-19 in such situations and produced an even 400 yards of offense on the day.
