Recap: Louisiana vs. Appalachian St

Lafayette, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Marcus Cox finished with 151 yards and two touchdowns as he helped push the Appalachian State Mountaineers to a 35-16 win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns in Sun Belt Conference play at Cajun Field.

Cox ran the ball 36 times for the Mountaineers (6-5, 5-2 SBC) as they won their fourth straight game and the fifth in six tries. Quarterback Taylor Lamb pitched in as he completed half of his 22 pass attempts for 195 yards and a score.

Over on the other side, Terrance Broadway hit on 21-of-33 through the air for 160 yards, but he was also sacked five times as the Ragin' Cajuns (7-4, 6-1) suffered their first league loss of the campaign and saw a six-game win streak come to an end. Elijah McGuire ran the ball nine times for 36 yards and a TD on the day.

Louisiana put the first points on the board as kicker Hunter Stover knocked through a 38-yard field goal after a drive in ASU territory stalled.

Unfortunately for the Ragin' Cajuns, Appalachian State then scored back-to- back TDs in the first frame as Cox made his way into the end zone on an eight yard run and Bobo Beathard was credited with a punt return of 33 yards for a score.

Midway through the second quarter Louisiana managed to close the gap when McGuire capped a four-play, 50-yard drive with an eight yard run to the end zone of his own. A 26-yard field goal by Stover at the conclusion of the first half drew the Ragin' Cajuns to within a single point, 14-13, at the break.

At the 5:39 mark of the third, Lamb hooked up with Montez McGuire on a 40-yard TD pass play, putting the Mountaineers ahead for good, even though Stover came on five minutes later to convert a 33-yard field goal.

In the fourth the visitors put the game away with touchdown runs of two and 36 yards by Cox and Terrence Upshaw, respectively.

Both teams ran a total of 69 plays on the day, with ASU generating 427 yards of offense and the hosts only 259 yards.

With the victory the Mountaineers are assured to finish at .500 or above in their first season at the FBS level.
