Vaughn completed 20-of-28 passes with an interception and was on the receiving end of a 28-yard scoring strike on a trick play for South Alabama (6-4, 5-3 Sun Belt), which gained bowl eligibility. Terrance Timmons rushed for 74 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, and Braedon Bowman had four receptions for 81 yards.

For Texas State (5-5, 3-3), Tyler Jones threw for 300 yards and a touchdown on 25-of-42 passing. Brandon Smith led all receivers in catches (five) and yards (86), and Robert Lowe turned 16 carries into 76 yards and a score.

Texas State opened up a 10-0 lead after one quarter. Lowe rushed in a 1-yard score at the 4:22 mark of the first period. Will Johnson kicked a 41-yard field goal less than a minute later after South Alabama fumbled the ball away.

The Jaguars got on the board early in the second quarter on a trick play. Vaughn tossed a backwards pass to Jake Howton, who then threw it back to Vaughn across the field for a 28-yard touchdown.

The Bobcats padded their lead six minutes later when Jones hooked up with Lawrence White on a 46-yard touchdown.

South Alabama made it a one-possession game, 17-10, with 1:16 left in the first half on a 46-yard field goal by Aleem Sunanon.

The Jaguars knotted the score on the first drive of the second half, marching 75 yards in eight plays with Vaughn finishing off the possession with an 8- yard touchdown pass to Danny Woodson.

South Alabama took the lead early in the fourth quarter following an 8-yard touchdown run by Terrance Timmons.

Texas State cut into its deficit with 4:21 left on a 31-yard field goal by Johnson.

After forcing a South Alabama punt, Texas State regained possession with 2:26 left and drove all the way down to the Jaguars' 4-yard line, but time ran out on their comeback attempt as Jones' final pass was incomplete to Ben Ijah.

South Alabama held on to win despite getting outgained, 406-384.
