Recap: Troy vs. New Mexico St
Troy, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Silvers threw for 211 yards and accounted for two total touchdowns as the Troy Trojans pulled away for a 41-24 victory over the New Mexico State Aggies in Sun Belt Conference play at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Silvers completed 23-of-30 pass attempts and piled up 70 yards on the ground for Troy (1-5, 1-1 Sun Belt), which was playing in its first game since head coach Larry Blakeney announced his intentions to retire following this season. Brandon Burks rushed for 176 yards on only 10 carries and Chandler Worthy had 180 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns.
Tyler Rogers finished with 272 yards and two touchdowns, as well as an interception, on 22-of-32 passing for New Mexico State (2-5, 0-3). Larry Rose III rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown to go with 50 yards receiving. Teldrick Morgan notched 67 yards and a score on seven receptions.
A 12-yard touchdown run from Silvers ended an 85-yard drive and gave Troy a 7-0 lead with 10:55 to play in the first quarter.
The Trojans also got a 28-yard field goal from Ryan Kay in the opening frame.
A 53-yard touchdown run from Rose III early in the second quarter allowed the Aggies to cut into their deficit.
However, Chandler Worthy returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown, keeping the Trojans ahead by 10.
Kay added a 41-yard field goal to Troy's total right before halftime.
The Aggies struck first in the second half on a 24-yard field goal from Maxwell Johnson.
Jordan Chunn scored on a two-yard touchdown run in response for the Trojans.
The Aggies responded quickly, as Rogers connected with Jerrel Brown on a 30- yard touchdown pass less than two minutes later.
Chunn found the end zone again, this time from 18 yards out midway through the fourth quarter.
Morgan brought in an 11-yard touchdown pass from Rogers just over two minutes later but Silvers and Worthy sealed the win with a 35-yard touchdown connection on the ensuing drive.
Troy recorded four sacks while only allowing one. Both teams were effective on third down, with the Trojans converting on 9-of-16 tries and New Mexico State on 8-of-16.Game Notes
