Recap: Troy vs. Appalachian St

Troy, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Marcus Cox rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns as the Appalachian State Mountaineers routed the Troy Trojans, 53-14, in a Sun Belt Conference battle at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Taylor Lamb threw for 110 yards and a touchdown on 9-of-16 passing and added 98 yards and a score on the ground for Appalachian State (2-5, 1-2 Sun Belt). Ricky Fergerson tallied 107 yards on the ground and Terrence Upshaw chipped in with 82.

Brandon Silvers threw for 156 yards on 20-of-30 pass attempts but was intercepted twice for Troy (1-6, 1-2).

Troy struck first, with Brandon Burks scoring on a five-yard touchdown run to cap off the opening drive, which covered 73 yards on 12 plays.

The Mountaineers wasted no time in responding, with Lamb throwing a 59-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Jones on the first play of the ensuing drive.

A 37-yard field goal from Bentlee Critcher near the end of the opening quarter put Appalachian State in front.

The Mountaineers added to their lead less than a minute later. Silvers was stopped on a run and fumbled the ball, which Olawale Dada scooped up and returned 20 yards for a touchdown.

Cox ran into the end zone from two yards out early in the second quarter, but Chandler Worthy helped Troy answer right back, returning the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown.

Appalachian State would record a safety at the end of the first half, as it went into the break, leading, 26-14.

That lead would grow early in the second half, as Cox scored on a 33-yard touchdown run with 12:41 left in the third quarter.

The Mountaineers continued to pull away in the third quarter, with Lamb running for a 16-yard touchdown.

Cox piled on to his team's total with a one-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.

The Mountaineers put the finishing touches on the win with a three-yard touchdown run from Kameron Bryant.

Appalachian State finished with 547 total yards, 437 of which came on the ground. Troy managed only 308 yards of total offense.
