Recap: Appalachian St vs. Idaho

Boone, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Marcus Cox rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Appalachian State Mountaineers to a 45-28 victory over the Idaho Vandals in Sun Belt Conference action at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Taylor Lamb completed 13-of-20 passes for 223 yards, three touchdowns and an interception for ASU (7-5, 6-2 Sun Belt), which closed out the regular season on a six-game winning streak and will await a potential bowl bid. Shaedon Meadors tallied three receptions for 69 yards and a score.

For Idaho (1-10, 1-7), losers of four straight, Matt Linehan threw for 208 yards, a touchdown and a pick on 21-of-37 passing. Elijhaa Penny had 95 rushing yards and two scores to go with three receptions for 25 yards and a touchdown.

Idaho got the scoring started midway through the first quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run by Kristoffer Olugbode, but the extra point was missed. ASU took a 7-6 lead less than a minute later when Lamb hooked up with Meadors on a 59- yard score on its first play of the ensuing drive.

The Vandals regained the lead at the 3:20 mark of the opening frame on a 43- yard field goal by Austin Rehkow. The Mountaineers answered at the tail end of a busy first quarter with a 49-yard field goal by Bentlee Critcher.

ASU extended its advantage to 17-9 early in the second quarter when Lamb and Tacoi Sumler connected on a 32-yard touchdown. Two minutes later Idaho retaliated when Penny rushed in a 2-yard score, but it remained down two, 17-15, following a failed two-point conversion attempt.

The Mountaineers added a touchdown with under two minutes to go in the first half when Cox finished off a nine-play, 91-yard drive with a 1-yard rushing score.

Midway through the third quarter, ASU tacked onto its advantage with another Lamb touchdown pass, this time an 8-yarder to Bobo Beathard.

Cox added a 10-yard rushing score early in the fourth.

A 2-yard rushing touchdown by Taylor Upshaw for ASU and a pair of Penny touchdowns for Idaho - a 7-yard run and an 8-yard reception - rounded out the scoring.

ASU tallied 430 yards and scored touchdowns on all four of its red zone drives.
