Statesboro, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Ellison threw for one touchdown and ran in another as Georgia Southern beat Appalachian State, 34-14, on Thursday in Sun Belt action.
Ellison threw for 73 yards with an interception but did most of his damage on the ground, rushing 21 times for 151 yards. Matt Breida had 135 yards and a score on 12 carries for GSU (3-2, 2-0 Sun Belt), winners in three of four following a one-point loss to NC State in the season opener.
Tyler Lamb completed 23-of-42 throws for 256 yards and a pair of interceptions for Appalachian State (1-3, 0-1). Lamb and Marcus Cox each scored on the ground in the setback.
GSU sprinted out to a 17-0 lead thanks to touchdown runs by Breida and Alfred Ramsby sandwiching a 19-yard Alex Hanks field goal.
Lamb put the Mountaineers on the board with a 19-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter and led a textbook two-minute drill for another score at the end of the half.
After Ellison's 17-yard touchdown to pass BJ Johnson made it 24-7, Lamb marched his offense down the field and Cox punched it in from a yard out to cut the deficit to 10 at halftime.
Appalachian State drove to the red zone on each of its first two drives in the second half, but failed to convert it into points after turning it over on downs and Lamb throwing a pick.
ASU went scoreless in the second half. Hanks' 35-yarder early in the fourth made it 27-14, and Ellison's QB keeper from six yards away capped the scoring.Game Notes
