Charleston, SC (Sports Network) - Charleston Southern named former assistant Jamey Chadwell as its new head football coach Thursday afternoon.

Chadwell succeeds Jay Mills, who he served under for five seasons from 2004-08.

"We want to be Big South champions," Chadwell said at his introductory news conference.

The 35-year-old Chadwell just completed his first season as the head coach at NCAA Division II Delta State, going 3-7. He also was the head coach for three seasons at North Greenville from 2009-11, compiling a 20-14 record and leading the Crusaders to the Division II quarterfinals in his final season.

At Charleston Southern, Chadwell coached receivers for two seasons and was promoted to assistant head coach in 2006. He also served as the Buccaneers' recruiting coordinator and was a member of the 2005 Big South championship staff.

He was a quarterback at East Tennessee State from 1995-99, including two years as the starter. He then was an assistant coach at his alma mater from 2000-03.

Charleston Southern had a 51-85 record in 10 seasons under Mills. He stepped down earlier this month after a 5-6 season to pursue a career in athletic administration.
