Las Cruces, NM (Sports Network) - Doug Martin has accepted, in principle, an offer to become New Mexico State's new head football coach, athletics director Dr. McKinley Boston announced Friday.

The official announcement will be made at a press conference on Monday, Feb. 4.

Martin was named interim head coach last week after DeWayne Walker left to take a position with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Walker was the Aggies' head coach from 2008-12. He was 1-11 this past season, and 10-40 during his tenure at New Mexico State.

"I am thrilled for the opportunity and very appreciative that Dr. Boston and the administration have the confidence in me to move this program forward," Martin said. "I think there is unlimited potential in this program and in this city and I look forward to building this football program to be part of the City of Las Cruces."

Martin was New Mexico State's offensive coordinator in 2011 before taking the same position at Boston College in 2012. He was also the head coach at Kent State from 2004-2010.
