Youngstown, OH (Sports Network) - Former Kansas football coach Mark Mangino has returned to his alma mater to become Youngstown State's assistant head coach, tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator
Penguins head coach Eric Wolford announced the move on Friday, reuniting the pair.
Wolford played for Mangino at Kansas State and they coached together at the school when Wolford was a graduate assistant working with the offensive line.
Mangino is from nearby New Castle, Pa. He was named the consensus 2007 FBS national coach of the year while at Kansas, where he was 50-48 in eight seasons from 2002-09.
"This is a homecoming for me," Mangino said. "I'm delighted to be at a great school with a great football tradition with a team and coach poised to do great things. Every coaching job I have ever taken was a rebuilding project, but this program is not rebuilding. This program has the potential to have a very good year and that's a credit to Eric Wolford, his staff and his team."
Mangino previously coached two seasons (1985-86) at Youngstown State, serving a year with Bill Narduzzi and then Jim Tressel. He earned his degree from YSU in 1987.
The Penguins are coming off a 7-4 season last year, including 4-4 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
