Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Memphis head coach Justin Fuente has received a one-year extension to his contract.

Fuente's contract, originally for five years when he was hired in December of 2011, now runs through the 2017 football season.

"Justin Fuente has met or exceeded every expectation we had for him during his first ten months as the head coach for the Tiger football program," said Memphis director of athletics Tom Bowen. "His program made impressive strides throughout the 2012 season and continues to be headed in the right direction. Now we, as a department, need to create a structure of support to work in unison with Coach Fuente and his program."

Memphis, which joins the Big East Conference this fall, won its final three games last season and finished 4-4 in Conference USA and 4-8 overall. The Tigers, however, led the conference in total defense giving up 331.6 yards per game.

Prior to joining Memphis, Fuente spent five seasons on Gary Patterson's TCU staff, initially joining in February 2007 as running backs coach. He was promoted to co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2009.
