Far Hills, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - The United States Golf Association announced Tuesday Shoal Creek has been selected to host the 2018 U.S. Women's Open Championship.

This will be the third USGA championship contested at Shoal Creek, as the course also hosted the 1986 U.S. Amateur Championship and the 2008 U.S. Junior Amateur.

Shoal Creek, which is located near Birmingham, Alabama, has also played host to the 1984 and 1990 PGA Championships, as well as hosting the Regions Tradition, a major on the Champions Tour, since 2011.

"Shoal Creek has a great track record as a championship site and the USGA is quite pleased to partner with the club for a U.S. Women's Open," USGA vice president and chairman of the Championship Committee Daniel B. Burton said. "We regard Shoal Creek as a wonderful test of golf and are confident it will again shine as a competitive venue for a USGA national championship."

The 2018 U.S. Women's Open will be contested from May 31-June 3.

The USGA also announced Tuesday the U.S. Women's Open will move to a date prior to the U.S. Open starting in 2018.

The U.S. Women's Open has been held before to the U.S. Open only three times in it's 69-year history, in 1996, 1999 and 2001.

"Conducting the U.S. Women's Open earlier in the year will allow the USGA to provide optimum playing conditions for the world's best players across a broader variety of the country's finest golf courses," Burton said.

The 2014 edition of the U.S. Women's Open will take place at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in the Village of Pinehurst, North Carolina, from June 19-22, which is the week immediately following the U.S. Open at the same location.
