Boston, MA (Sports Network) - The son of longtime Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy was arraigned Friday in Waltham District Court on charges he fatally stabbed his girlfriend.

Jared Remy, 34, was arrested Tuesday on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for allegedly attacking Jennifer Martel. He was released on no bail, but Thursday night he allegedly murdered the 27-year-old Martel, the mother of his 4-year-old daughter.

"I've been in touch with the Remy family obviously and they are obviously devastated. It's just a very sad and tragic day for two families," Remy's attorney Peter Bella told reporters.

According to several reported accounts, Jared Remy attacked Martel in the kitchen of their townhome and the altercation spilled into other areas before finally Remy pinned Martel to the ground of their patio before he repeatedly stabbed her Thursday night.

Neighbors reportedly tried to help Martel, but were kept away as Remy, who has also been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, slashed at them.

"It's not an easy thing to watch. It's not an easy thing to try to stop, and not be able to," Benjamin Ray, witness to the murder, told reporters.

Remy reportedly has a troubled legal past with 15 criminal charges from 1998-2011.

"This morning, we learned of a terrible tragedy. All of us at NESN and the Red Sox, along with Jerry Remy, are filled with grief for everyone involved, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Jennifer Martel," a statement said from New England Sports Network, the cable outlet that Jerry Remy works for broadcasting Red Sox games.

Jerry Remy is taking a leave of absence from NESN. Dennis Eckersley, a studio analyst for NESN, will take over in the booth for this weekend's series against the New York Yankees. Eckersley will reportedly also continue his stay alongside broadcast partner Don Orsillo into next week when the Red Sox are on the West Coast for games against the Giants and Dodgers.
