Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - The Cleveland Indians picked up a bat for the stretch run, acquiring outfielder Jason Kubel from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
The 31-year-old Kubel was designated for assignment earlier in the week after batting .220 with five homers and 32 RBI over 89 games this season, his second with the Diamondbacks. He belted a career-high 30 homers and knocked in a club-best 90 runs last year.
Kubel returns to the AL Central after playing for the Minnesota Twins (2004, 2006-11).
To clear room on the 40-man roster for Kubel, the Indians recalled pitcher Scott Barnes from Triple-A Columbus and placed him on the 60-day disabled list with a left wrist sprain.
The Indians will make a corresponding move on the 25-man roster once Kubel joins the team on Saturday.
