Kansas City, MO ( - The Kansas City Royals announced on Thursday that the club exercised their 2014 club option on starting pitcher James Shields.

Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Shields finished 2013 with a 13-9 record and a 3.15 earned run average. The 31-year old righty struck out 196 batters in an American League-best 228 2/3 innings in his debut season with the Royals after coming over in a trade from Tampa Bay last December.

Shields became the ace of KC's pitching staff the moment he arrived. His 27 quality starts were the most by a Royals' pitcher since Kevin Appier posted 29 in 1993, and he tied for the AL lead with 34 games started.

After 252 appearances, all but one as a starter, over eight pro seasons, the California native holds a 100-82 record and 3.79 ERA.
