Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Kansas City Royals requested release waivers on pitcher Luis Mendoza on Monday to allow the right-hander to sign with a professional team in Japan.
The Kansas City Star reported Monday that Mendoza, who has started 40 games for the Royals over the past two seasons, has reached an agreement with the Nippon Ham Fighters of the Japanese Pacific League.
Mendoza compiled a 12-17 record with a 4.72 earned run average over 42 starts and 58 total appearances in four seasons with Kansas City. The 30-year-old went 2-6 with a 5.36 ERA in 22 games (15 starts) last year.
The Mexican native spent most of the 2012 campaign as a member of the Royals' rotation, posting an 8-10 record with a 4.23 ERA through 25 starts and five relief outings.
