Anaheim, CA ( - Seeking to upgrade a problem area from last season, the Los Angeles Angels officially agreed to terms on a three-year contract with relief pitcher Joe Smith on Wednesday.

Financial terms were not disclosed, though reported Saturday that the deal was worth a total of $15.75 million.

One of the most durable relievers in the majors over the past few years, Smith compiled a 16-9 record with a 2.42 earned run average and three saves while with the Cleveland Indians the last three seasons. The right-hander posted a 6-2 mark with a 2.29 ERA in 70 appearances in 2013 to help the Tribe to a surprise berth in the American League Wild Card Game.

Smith has pitched in at least 70 games in three straight campaigns, joining Tampa Bay's Joel Peralta as the only AL hurlers to do so over that stretch.

Over seven seasons in the majors, Smith has gone 27-16 with a 2.97 ERA over 439 games with the New York Mets and Indians.

The 29-year-old is expected to serve alongside lefty Sean Burnett in a setup role for returning closer Ernesto Frieri in Anaheim, and will be expected to boost an Angels bullpen that finished 13th in AL in ERA in 2013.

To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the Angels designated pitcher Juan Gutierrez for assignment.

Gutierrez made 28 relief appearances for the Angels last season, finishing with a 1-4 record and 5.19 ERA.
