New York, NY (Sports Network) - Major League Baseball handed down discipline Friday for the on-field incidents that occurred during Tuesday's Diamondbacks- Dodgers game, with Arizona pitcher Ian Kennedy receiving a 10-game suspension for his primary role in the fracas.

It all started in the bottom of the sixth inning of Tuesday's contest, when Kennedy hit Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig in the face with a pitch.

Puig remained in the game, but the incident sparked retribution from LA hurler Zack Greinke, who drilled Miguel Montero in the back in the seventh inning.

Both benches cleared momentarily after Montero was hit, but order was restored until the bottom of the seventh, when Kennedy plunked Greinke in the shoulder/head area.

The benches immediately emptied and things got physical quickly. While it was unclear if punches were thrown, Dodgers hitting coach Mark McGwire was seen gripping Arizona coach Matt Williams by the collar. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly was restrained from trying to reach Arizona counterpart Kirk Gibson.

The skirmish was finally broken up after several minutes. Kennedy, Gibson and coach Turner Ward were ejected for the D'backs, while Puig, McGwire and pitcher Ronald Belisario were removed from the game for Los Angeles.

Diamondbacks infielder Eric Hinske received a five-game suspension for leaving the dugout and for his aggressive actions during the incidents, while LA pitcher J.P. Howell and utilityman Skip Schumaker each received two-game bans for similar offenses during the brawl.

McGwire was also slapped with a two-game suspension for his role, while Belisario and Mattingly were each given one-game bans.

Gibson received a one-game suspension for the intentional actions of Kennedy after warnings had already been issued to both teams when Greinke plunked Montero.

The players, managers and coach that received a suspension were also fined, as were Greinke, Puig, Montero and Arizona outfielder Gerardo Parra.

Mattingly and Gibson are scheduled to serve their suspensions Friday, when the Dodgers open a series with the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park and the D'backs begin a set with the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

The Dodgers have also received a fine for letting players currently on the disabled list leave the dugout and enter the field of play during the melee, which is a violation of MLB rules.

Neither club will be allowed to have players who are on the DL sit in its dugout in games throughout the weekend.
