Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Corey Hart underwent right knee surgery Friday morning and will be sidelined four months, the team announced.

Milwaukee's team physician, Dr. William Raasch, repaired a tear in Hart's meniscus and debrided his knee joint, taking away damaged tissue to help the healing process.

Hart, the Brewers' longest-tenured player, is in the final season of a three- year, $26.5 million contract. Hart had an average of .270 in 2012, with 30 home runs and 83 RBI in 149 total games.

Hart moved to first base last season following Mat Gamel's torn ACL in May. Now, however, with Gamel being 100 percent, it's his turn to take the place of the injured Hart.

According to the team, Hart experienced swelling in his knee during offseason workouts. He was originally expected to undergo surgery Tuesday, but waited for a second opinion on an MRI scan from Colorado specialist Richard Steadman.
