Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - After meeting with renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews, New York Mets ace Matt Harvey will delay surgery to his right elbow and continue the rehabilitation process in hopes of pitching in 2014.

Harvey has a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow, which was revealed by an MRI on August 26.

Typically, the injury requires Tommy John surgery in order to correct. Mets physicians determined that the surgical procedure would likely be necessary, unless Harvey could complete a throwing program free of elbow related symptoms.

Apparently, Harvey is willing to give it a shot after speaking with Dr. Andrews on Monday, who recommended he try the throwing program before making a decision on surgery.

The 24-year-old will embark on a structured throwing program of up to 6-8 weeks, and based on how the elbow holds up, he will make a decision from there regarding surgery.

If he ultimately decides to have the surgery, it will eliminate any chance of him pitching in 2014.

Harvey became one of the elite pitchers in 2012 in just his second big league season. He made 26 starts and pitched to a 9-5 record with a 2.27 ERA and 191 strikeouts.
