Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - New York Mets closer Bobby Parnell has a torn medial collateral ligament in his right elbow and could need surgery.

The Mets said Parnell complained of tightness in his elbow following Monday's game against Washington. He underwent an MRI exam, which revealed a partial tear of the ligament.

Parnell will rest for about two weeks after receiving a Platelet Rich Plasma injection and will then begin a throwing program, which will determine if surgery is necessary.

The 29-year-old right-hander blew a save in Monday's opener against the Nationals when he yielded the tying run in the ninth inning of what eventually finished as a 9-7 Washington win in 10 innings.

Parnell was coming off the best season of his career in 2013 when he notched 22 saves in 26 chances while posting a 2.16 ERA in 49 games. He missed the last two months of the season with a herniated disc in his neck that required surgery last September.
