Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Yankees acquired left-handed pitcher Jeff Francis in a trade with the Oakland Athletics on Friday.

The deal sent Francis and cash considerations to New York for a player to be named later.

The Yankees needed to add depth to their rotation with ace Masahiro Tanaka out indefinitely. Tanaka has a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow and with successful rehab could return in approximately six weeks.

Francis, a first-round draft pick by the Colorado Rockies in 2002, was recently designated for assignment by the Athletics after recording a 6.08 ERA in nine relief appearances over 13 1/3 innings. The veteran has a 5.89 ERA in 10 games with Oakland and the Cincinnati Reds this season.

For his career, the 33-year-old has a record of 70-80 with a 4.95 ERA and 847 strikeouts in 238 games.

The Yankees also designated right-hander Jim Miller for assignment and recalled right-hander Matt Daley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
