Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Phillies officially re-signed catcher Carlos Ruiz on Thursday.

The three-year deal is worth $26 million with a club option for a fourth season, along with performance and award bonuses.

Ruiz, who turns 35 in January, struggled at the plate in 2013, a year that was marred by his 25-game suspension for a failed drug test. He hit .268 with 16 doubles, five homers and 37 RBI in 92 games (83 starts).

In 2012, Ruiz hit .325 with 32 doubles, 16 homers and 68 RBI while making his first All-Star team.

"Numerous times we've stated Carlos' importance to our ballclub," said Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. "Not only does he combine excellent defense with offensive production, but the last couple years he has developed into a clubhouse leader and someone who is relied upon, not just by the pitchers he works with but by young position players, as well. Carlos is a championship-caliber player at a premium position and we are very happy to have him as a Phillie for 2014 and beyond."

The Panamanian started his career with the Phillies in 2006. He has hit .274 with 169 doubles, 57 homers and 336 RBI in 825 career games with Philadelphia.
