Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have decided to shut down pitcher Wandy Rodriguez for the remainder of the season.

"Wandy has worked diligently to return to action, but despite all Wandy's and our medical staffs' work and efforts, he has not been able to return to pitch without pain," Bucs GM Neal Huntington revealed in a statement issued on Saturday. "We have decided that it is in Wandy's best interests and the Pirates' best interests to allow more time for the injury to the flexor tendon in his left forearm to heal and to shift our focus from a return in 2013 to having Wandy ready for Opening Day 2014."

Rodriguez was placed on the 15-day disabled on list June 6, after leaving his start against the Atlanta Braves with forearm tightness. The 34-year-old lefty had gone 6-4 in 12 starts with a 3.59 earned run average but has not pitched in the majors since.

Pittsburgh enters play one game behind St. Louis in the NL Central, but holding the first wild-card slot with an 85-62 record.
