Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - The Texas Rangers have welcomed back Ivan Rodriguez into the organization, making him special assistant to the general manager.

Rodriguez, who will also work as an instructor and an ambassador for the club, played for the Rangers from 1991-2002 and 2009, batting .304 with 217 home runs and 842 RBI. He also won the American League Most Valuable Player award in 1999 and was a 14-time All-Star.

The former catcher retired from playing on April 23, 2012, and was honored in a ceremony prior to a game against the Yankees.

Over 21 seasons with the Rangers, Marlins (2003), Tigers (2004-08), Yankees (2008), Astros (2009) and Nationals (2010-11), Rodriguez has a career average of .296 with 311 home runs and 1,132 RBI. He is one of only five players in history to record a .295 career average, 2,800 hits, 550 doubles, 300 home runs and 1,300 RBI.

Rodriguez also earned 13 Gold Gloves, including 10 in a row from 1992-2001, and his 2,427 games caught is an all-time major league record.
