Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - The Texas Rangers placed infielder/outfielder Jeff Baker on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 13, with a sprained right thumb on Tuesday.

Baker batted .317 with nine home runs and 16 runs batted in over 37 games, including 23 starts, with the Rangers before injuring his right thumb while celebrating with a teammate during a June 12 loss to the Cleveland Indians.

Also on Tuesday, Texas optioned first baseman Chris McGuiness to Triple-A Round Rock. McGuiness, 25, made his major league debut with the Rangers on June 7, but batted just .176 with a double and an RBI in 10 games.

To replace the duo, the Rangers recalled pitcher Joseph Ortiz and catcher Robinson Chirinos from Round Rock.

Ortiz was on Texas' Opening Day roster, but was optioned to Round Rock on June 5 after going 2-1 with a 5.13 earned run average over 20 appearances with the Rangers in his first big league action.

Chirinos, 29, started three games with the Rangers earlier this season and hit .250 with two doubles in his first major league action since 2011.
