Recap: Washington vs. Philadelphia

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Jimmy Rollins homered twice and Phillies newcomer Nate Schierholtz hit a go-ahead solo blast to lift Philadelphia over the NL East-leading Nationals, 3-2, on Wednesday.

The middle installment of this three-game series came one day after the last- place Phillies unloaded outfielders Hunter Pence and Shane Victorino in trade- deadline deals.

Schierholtz was one of the players received from the Giants in the Pence swap, and his fifth-inning homer gave starter Vance Worley a lead that was never relinquished.

Worley (6-6) allowed a pair of unearned runs in the first frame, then retired 14 of the final 16 hitters he faced in his seven-inning outing.

Edwin Jackson (6-7) allowed eight hits, including three home runs, while walking four and striking out six in 5 2/3 innings for the Nationals, who had won eight of nine before dropping the first two in this set.

"I got hurt on balls up in the zone," Jackson said, referring to the home-run balls.

Rollins' first home run -- a second-deck shot in the third inning -- cut the Phillies' deficit to 2-1, and the leadoff hitter found the right-field seats again in the fifth to tie things.

Schierholtz took the next pitch to nearly the same spot as Rollins, homering in just his third at-bat in a Phillies uniform.

"This team has a bunch of guys that want to go out and battle and win. That's why I'm here," Schierholtz said. "This is my family now."

A sliding catch by Schierholtz as well as Erik Kratz throwing out Ryan Zimmerman trying to steal second helped the Phillies' bullpen get through the eighth, while Jonathan Papelbon set down the side in order in the ninth to post his 23rd save of the season.

Kevin Frandsen's error at third base in the first spoiled a potential inning- ending double play ball. The miscue left the bases loaded with one out, and the Nationals scored two runs on Adam LaRoche's single and Danny Espinosa's groundout.

Worley got some help from his defense in the second when Domonic Brown, recently recalled from the minors, threw out Jackson trying to score from second on Bryce Harper's base hit to left.

Game Notes

The Phillies won despite going 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position...Rollins has eight career multi-home run games...Worley allowed six hits and a walk...Josh Lindblom, acquired in the Victorino trade from the Dodgers, made his Phillies debut in the eighth and gave up a single to Zimmerman before striking out Michael Morse...Harper had two of Washington's seven hits.
