Recap: Philadelphia vs. Arizona

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Three years his junior, Diamondbacks right fielder Justin Upton smacked his 100th career homer, less than an hour before brother B.J. also reached the same milestone in Tampa.

It was the 13th time the Upton brothers homered on the same day.

Justin Upton collected two hits and two runs scored as Arizona edged the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-2, in the opener of a three-game set.

At 7:17 p.m. (est), 24-year-old Justin crushed a solo shot deep into the seats in left in the second to reach the 100-homer plateau. 56 minutes later, B.J. went deep against the Baltimore Orioles in the fourth.

"I definitely wanted to beat him to it," Justin Upton said. "It really felt good. I'm happy for him. It's a big night for the family."

The Upton's became the sixth set of brothers to eclipse 100 career longballs. Sandy and Roberto Alomar, Clete and Ken Boyer, Bret and Aaron Boone, Joe and Vince DiMaggio and Bob and Irish Muesel are the only other brother combos to accomplish the feat.

Ian Kennedy (10-8) surrendered two runs on seven hits and two walks in six innings for the streaking D-backs, who have won four straight and six of their last seven.

"He gave us six innings, two runs," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said of Kennedy's start. "He gave his team a chance to win."

J.J. Putz fired a 1-2-3 ninth to notch his 20th save of the year.

Chase Utley cracked a solo shot, while Kyle Kendrick (4-9) was charged with three runs -- two earned -- on five hits in four innings for Philadelphia, which has dropped five of its last seven contests.

The D-backs plated a run in the second and two more in the fourth to jump out to a three-run lead.

Upton's moonshot in the second put Arizona on the board, while Paul Goldschmidt's sacrifice fly and Chris Johnson's RBI single in the fourth made it 3-0.

Utley launched a towering blast into the front row of seats in right in the home half and Nate Schierholtz's sac fly in the fifth cut the deficit to 3-2.

Upton showed off his arm in the sixth. With two outs and John Mayberry at second, Kevin Frandsen fisted a base hit into right field. Fielding the ball on a short hop, Upton threw a seed at home, which nabbed Mayberry -- although he appeared to slide in safely underneath the tag.

"I thought he was safe," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.

Arizona added some insurance in the ninth when Jason Kubel clubbed a solo shot into the second deck in right for a 4-2 D-backs edge.
