Recap: San Diego vs. Arizona

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - The Diamondbacks are off to the best start in franchise history thanks to Chris Young's two-run homer in the 11th inning, which lifted Arizona to a 4-2 victory over the San Diego Padres.

Micah Owings (0-1) glanced Gerardo Parra's jersey to open the away 11th, and his next pitch -- a hanging slider -- was lined into the left-field seats by Young.

The blast helped give the Diamondbacks a 4-0 record for the first time in their 15-year existence.

Arizona's bullpen blew the win for Trevor Cahill, but silenced the Padres in the later frames. David Hernandez struck out Cameron Maybin with a runner on third to end the ninth, Craig Breslow (1-0) hurled a perfect 10th to earn the win and J.J. Putz worked around a leadoff single in the 11th to earn his third save.

San Diego lost the opener of this three-game series after salvaging the finale of a four-game series against the Dodgers on Sunday.

Prior to Young's homer, Arizona had just two hits following Paul Goldschmidt's two-run double off Edinson Volquez in the first inning.

Cahill, who was raised an hour north of San Diego, struggled with his control early on. He walked the bases loaded in the second frame before striking out Maybin to get out of the jam, then threw a wild pitch that eventually helped Chase Headley score on Jesus Guzman's groundout in the third.

He settled down from there, but Brad Ziegler was unable to hang on to the 2-1 lead in the seventh. Orlando Hudson started the frame by legging out a triple, then scored the tying run on Jason Bartlett's base hit to left.

Cahill lasted six innings against his hometown team, allowing one run on two hits and six walks in his first start for the Diamondbacks.

"I was just happy to come out with as little damage as possible," Cahill said.

His counterpart, Volquez, followed up a loss on Opening Day with a quality start. He struck out eight over seven frames and gave up two runs on five hits and three walks.

"Nice solid three-pitch mix. Threw the ball very well," San Diego manager Bud Black said of Volquez.

Game Notes

The Diamondbacks were coming off a season-opening series sweep over the Giants...Cahill, who had five strikeouts, was acquired from the Athletics on Dec. 9 for a package of players that included pitching prospect Jarrod Parker.
