Recap: St. Louis vs. Chicago WSox

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - David Freese hit a two-run homer and an RBI double and the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Chicago White Sox, 5-3, in the finale of a three-game interleague series at Busch Stadium

Matt Adams added a two-run single for the Cardinals, who took two of three in this series. Daniel Descalso chipped in with two hits and a run scored in the victory.

Jake Westbrook (5-6) retired the first 12 batters he faced and allowed three runs on five hits without issuing a walk over six frames to earn the win. Jason Motte earned his 13th save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.

"You're gonna have ups and downs and I think there's a lot of people out there that don't understand that," said Freese. "But in this clubhouse we know what a season is like and what this game can do to you. You just have to grind it out. We're right in the thick of things and that's where we want to be."

Adam Dunn accounted for all of Chicago's runs with a three-run homer, his 22nd of the year which tied him with Texas' Josh Hamilton for the major league lead. Alejandro De Aza and Gordon Beckham scored on the homer in the White Sox's third loss in four tries.

Gavin Floyd (4-7) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits and four walks with five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

"Right now it's tough and it's not fun but you just have to keep on going,' said Floyd.

The Cardinals struck first in the second inning and stayed in front for good. Allen Craig led off the frame with a double into the right-center field gap and scored when Freese laced a double into the same spot.

The reigning World Series MVP struck again in the third when he blasted a two- run shot over the wall in straightaway center field to extend the Cards' lead to 3-0.

Descalso started the Cardinals fifth with a base hit into right and moved to second on a wild pitch by Floyd. After Craig walked and Freese flied out, Yadier Molina beat out an infield single to load the bases and Adams came through with a two-run single to make it a 5-0 game.

The White Sox finally got on the board in the sixth. De Aza started a two-out rally with a base hit and Beckham followed with a single before Dunn brought everybody home with a moon shot home run onto the lawn beyond center field to pull the ChiSox within two.

They got no closer, however, as the Cardinals' bullpen corps of Eduardo Sanchez, Victor Marte and Mitchell Boggs guided the team through the seventh and eighth and Motte quickly retired Alex Rios, A.J. Pierzynski and Alexei Ramirez to lock up the win.
