Recap: LA Angels vs. Arizona

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Ervin Santana pitched a one-hitter on Saturday as the LA Angels of Anaheim took a 2-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second of three games.

Santana (4-7) was perfect through six innings and got the first two outs of the seventh before Justin Upton punched a single up the middle to break up the bid. He did throw his first shutout of the season as he gave up just the one hit and one walk with five strikeouts.

"My last bullpen session was good and I brought it to the game," said Santana. "I made adjustments in my fastball command. When I passed six innings, you think about it a little bit. The pitch Upton hit was a fastball down and away, he hit a good pitch."

Mark Trumbo's two-run home run in the first inning accounted for all the offense in the game while Torii Hunter went 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Angels, who have won six of their last eight.

Joe Saunders (4-5) pitched well but suffered the loss as he gave up two runs on eight hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts over six innings for the Diamondbacks, who have dropped three of five.

"Joe pitched great and he battled his butt off," said Arizona manager Kirk Gibson. "He just made one mistake and gave us a chance to win. When Ervin settled in, he made all this pitches. Give him credit, he threw a great game."

Santana, who threw a no-hitter on July 27 last year against Cleveland, was looking to become the second pitcher this week to throw a perfect game. San Francisco's Matt Cain twirled the 22nd perfecto in MLB history on Wednesday against the Houston Astros.

He went through the Diamondbacks order twice without letting anyone on base then struck out Chris Young to start the seventh before getting Willie Bloomquist to ground out. Upton, though, spoiled it with a grounder through the middle. Paul Goldschmidt then flied out to end the inning.

After setting down Arizona in order in the eighth, Santana got Gerardo Parra to strike out to start the ninth. Miguel Montero then worked a walk, but Young and Bloomquist both flied out, ending the game.

"You can't say enough about Ervin," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "He had a great plan and committed to it. He threw his fastball in different zones. He pitched with purpose tonight."

The only runs of the game came in the first when Hunter singled with one out and Trumbo hit his 15th homer of the season two batters later.

The Angels, who were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10, put runners on base in every inning except the third, but were unable to push any more runs across.

Game Notes

Santana has seven shutouts and 14 complete games in his career...It was the 24th one-hitter in Angels history...Santana improved to 2-0 in two games against the Diamondbacks...The Angels have won six of the last eight games against the Diamondbacks.
