Recap: Seattle vs. Cleveland

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Ichiro Suzuki and Chone Figgins smacked a solo home run apiece, while Jason Vargas tossed seven solid innings as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Cleveland Indians, 4-1, on Wednesday.

Vargas (2-1) struck out seven and allowed one run on four hits and three walks, while Brandon League picked up his fifth save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth.

"Vargas was the story, he threw the ball very well. He held us in check the whole night," Cleveland Manny Acta said of Vargas' outing.

Seattle has won three of its last four games.

Derek Lowe (2-1), who debuted with Seattle in 1997, was touched for four runs on eight hits and six walks in 4 1/3 innings for Cleveland, which had its four-game winning streak snapped.

Jason Kipnis drove in the lone run for the Tribe.

Seattle jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two frames.

The Mariners plated two in the home first following Figgins' eighth career leadoff home run -- and first homer since Apr. 1, 2011 -- to right-center field. Two batters later, Suzuki laced a line drive shot over the wall in right-center field.

"He's (Suzuki) hit a lot of balls hard, he's hit a lot of hard outs. He's backspinning the ball much better and Figgins too for that matter," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said of Suzuki and Figgins.

Seattle added another run in the bottom of the second after Jesus Montero worked a two-out, bases-loaded walk to bring home Brendan Ryan, who reached with a single.

The Indians got on the board in the visitor's third.

Aaron Cunningham led off with a double to left field, and after Jason Donald moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt, Kipnis plated him with a sacrifice fly to center field.

But Seattle got the run back in the home fourth on Dustin Ackley's RBI single up the middle.
