Recap: San Diego vs. Pittsburgh

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Edinson Volquez tied a season-high with 10 strikeouts to guide the San Diego Padres past the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-1, in the opener of a three-game set at Petco Park.

Volquez (8-9) allowed just one run on five hits over 6 2/3 innings to earn his first win since July 30.

"I made adjustments tonight and everything was working," Volquez said.

Will Venable had two hits and drove in a pair and Everth Cabrera went 3-for-5 with a run scored for the Padres, who have won two in a row on the heels of a five-game skid.

Dale Thayer worked around a single in the ninth to pick up his seventh save of the season.

Kevin Correia (9-8), who pitched two innings of relief in the Pirates 19- inning win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, was pegged with the loss after giving up all three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.

"I haven't even throw back-to-back days in the bullpen in over five years," Correia said. "I was surprised how well my arm and everything felt."

Neil Walker drove in the lone run for the Pirates, who are 3-16 against the Padres dating back to Sept. 19, 2009.

San Diego scored two in the first. Cabrera doubled then scored on Venable's base hit up the middle. Venable took second on a passed ball before moving to third when Chase Headley grounded out. After Carlos Quentin was hit by a pitch, Yasmani Grandal grounded out to second, allowing Venable to come home.

The Padres went up 3-0 in the second after Cameron Maybin scored on Venable's base hit through the hole at second.

The Pirates got on the board in the sixth when Walker cracked a single to right field to score Andrew McCutchen. McCutchen beat out an infield single to open the frame, then took second on Headley's throwing error before coming around on Walker's base hit.
