Recap: San Diego vs. Philadelphia

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - San Diego native Cole Hamels gave up just one run over six innings, as the Phillies took a 4-1 decision over the Padres on Friday.

Shane Victorino hit his second home run of the season, and Juan Pierre drove in two runs. Hamels (2-1) gave up six hits and one walk with four strikeouts over six strong innings to help Philadelphia win its 13th consecutive game at PETCO Park.

Jonathan Papelbon picked up his fifth save with a perfect ninth.

Edinson Volquez (0-2) suffered the loss by allowing three runs on five hits over six-plus innings. He departed with a 1-0 lead and the bases loaded in the seventh, and reliever Andrew Cashner allowed all three inherited runners to score.

Cameron Maybin scored the Padres' lone run after a triple, one of only two extra-base hits for San Diego, which dropped its fourth straight and eighth in nine tries.

Victorino, Ty Wiggington and Freddy Galvis opened the seventh inning with consecutive singles to load the bases. Cashner then spelled Volquez and gave up a run-scoring single to Brian Schneider, his first hit of the season.

"[Schneider] knew what he had to do," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. "He jumped on the first fastball he saw. It came out ok. That's good, that's kind of how to do it."

After pinch-hitter Jim Thome struck out, Pierre lifted a pitch to right, plating Wiggington and Galvis for a 3-1 lead.

Victorino fought off several pitches -- and was called for intentionally leaning into a pitch -- before blasting Josh Spence's seventh offering into the left-field seats an inning later.

That was more than enough for the Philadelphia bullpen. Jose Contreras, Chad Qualls, and Papelbon faced the minimum in an inning apiece, with only Jason Bartlett reaching on a Contreras walk during that span. Bartlett was erased when Chris Denorfia grounded into a double play.

The Padres stranded several runners in the early innings but finally got to Hamels in the fifth. Cameron Maybin led off with a triple, and although Hamels got Chase Headley to strike out, Maybin came home on Jesus Guzman's groundout.

"He seemed to really buckle down when he really needed to make a pitch, and he did," Padres manager Bud Black said of Hamels. "But overall I think our at- bats against him were good, we just couldn't really get a big hit to knock in a couple of runs."

Denorfia kept San Diego within three in the eighth. With the bases loaded, Pierre hit what looked to be a bloop single into right, but Denorfia came charging and snared it with a diving grab.

Game Notes

Hamels was charged with two balks...Since being held hitless in his first 12 major-league at-bats, Galvis is 11-for-33...Nine of Philadelphia's 11 hits were singles...Saturday's matchup features Roy Halladay (3-0) against Cory Luebke (1-1).
